OPINEL hand pruner slate with three positions - beech handle
3 position dryer OPINEL stainless steel with slate grey beech, for cuts up to 20mm in diameter
Unchanged for more than a century, its design is one of the most successful of all time. Originally four components form the Opinel knife, blade, fixed virole, rivet and handle. The fixed virole is necessary to be able to securely rivet the blade in the handle, but in 1955 Opinel invented the Virobloc® system. It adds a rotating virole that by sliding on the fixed virole can close the slot and thus block the folded blade

In 1955, Marcel Opinel designed the Virobloc® system to improve the safety of knife use. It adds a rotating virole that by sliding on the fixed virole can close the slot and thus block the folded blade. The idea is simple but its realization is complex. It is in this capacity that in 1985 the Opinel was dedicated to the "Vancouver and Albert Museum" among the world's best-designed objects alongside the Porsche 911 and the Rolex watch.
In the 1990s the Virobloc® system is modified to allow the blade to be blocked in a closed position. Reserved initially with a few references, it is generalized on all models in 2000.
